Engagement rate calculator

Add up likes, comments, reposts and saves, then divide by followers, reach or views. One post, or the average of several.

Your post's numbers

Filled in with an example post. For several posts, enter totals and the number of posts. Blank counts as zero; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Meets the 500 follower minimum.

The X account must also be at least 6 months old. ViewPayout reads both from X.

One numerator, three formulas

  • Engagements = likes + comments + reposts + saves. A blank field counts as zero.
  • By followers = engagements per post / followers x 100, where engagements per post = engagements / posts. This is Socialinsider's average engagement rate per post by followers.
  • By reach = engagements / reach x 100, which Hootsuite calls ERR.
  • By views = engagements / views x 100, Hootsuite's engagement rate by views.

For several posts, enter totals for likes, comments, reposts, saves, reach and views, and the number of posts. Reach and views are divided total by total, so a post seen more counts for more. Hootsuite's average takes each post's own rate and averages those; the two agree when every post has the same reach.

Why the three rates differ

As Cloud Campaign puts it, the formula is always engagements divided by an audience figure, times 100. The audience figure is what changes.

  • Followers is the figure most benchmarks use. It reads low when a post travels past your followers.
  • Reach counts the people who saw the post, which Cloud Campaign calls the fairest way to compare posts.
  • Views count repeat views as well as new viewers, so for the same post the rate by views is never above the rate by reach.

To claim a ViewPayout bounty, an X account needs at least 500 followers and must be at least 6 months old. The tool checks the follower count; ViewPayout reads both from X. See view verification and the rule book.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Add up a post's likes, comments, reposts and saves, divide by followers, reach or views, and multiply by 100. 180 engagements on 6,000 followers is 3.00%.

What is a good engagement rate?

Hootsuite's guide says "a good engagement rate generally falls between 1% and 5%", and adds that it depends on platform, industry and follower count. Your own posts are the steadier test: compare one rate over time.

Should I divide by followers or by reach?

Either, as long as you keep to one. Cloud Campaign advises choosing one method, naming it in the report and applying it every time. Followers matches most benchmarks; reach compares posts more fairly.

How do I average engagement rate over several posts?

Enter the totals for the posts and how many posts there are. The follower rate is worked out per post, and the reach and views rates divide total engagements by total reach or views.

What counts as an engagement on X?

Put replies in comments and bookmarks in saves, and count quote posts with reposts. Leave a field blank to count it as zero.

Do I need a certain engagement rate to claim a bounty?

No. A bounty asks for at least 500 followers and an account at least 6 months old, and a brand can ask for more. Each post is paid for its verified views, and the fraud screen sends a post whose views have almost no likes, replies or reposts to a person before it is paid.
